I’m Steve Attal — independent optician, frame curator, and the person you’ll actually meet when you walk into Steve Attal Optica in Campo de Ourique, Lisbon.
It started with a summer job, in 1996
My story in this craft began in 1996, four years before I had any diploma. I spent my summers in Paris working in anti-reflective coating quality control — learning optics from the inside, from the machines outward.
My father had spent his career in eyewear manufacturing alongside some of the great names of Parisian optics, and later worked closely with Alain Afflelou until his retirement. I grew up surrounded by frames, lenses, and the conversation around them.
I earned my BTS Opticien-Lunetier in 2000. For the six years that followed I worked for major French chains — Alain Afflelou, Optic 2000 — and then for independent opticians, including four years on the Champs-Élysées, two of them as assistant manager. That avenue taught me what a demanding international clientele expects: precision, patience, and a level of service that doesn’t cut corners.
Vincennes, 2006 — becoming an independent
In 2006 I took over Optique du Bois in Vincennes, a neighbourhood institution that had been run by the same figure for 35 years. I was young, and I had to earn the trust of a loyal clientele while bringing something new: designer collections and independent brands you couldn’t find anywhere else nearby.
In 2013 I renovated the shop completely, and it became known as “the creator’s optician of Vincennes.” I still own Optique du Bois today.
Lisbon, 2024 — a second chapter
My wife — also an optician — and I moved to Lisbon in 2019 to give our three children a different quality of life. After a long search, I found the right place in Campo de Ourique, and in April 2024 I opened Steve Attal Optica.
This time I put my own name on the door. I wanted people to associate the work with a person, not a sign.

I travel to international eyewear fairs — New York, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Milan, Paris — to find frames before they arrive anywhere else in Portugal.
But the frames are only half of it. What actually happens here is a conversation. I listen first. I look at your face, your life, how you work, what you want to project. Then we try things. Sometimes twelve pairs. The right frame doesn’t hide you — it introduces you.
I work in French, English and Portuguese, which makes this a natural home for Lisbon’s French-speaking and expat communities.

Tout commence par un job d’été, en 1996
Tout a commencé en 1996, quatre ans avant mon diplôme, en contrôle qualité des traitements antireflets à Paris. Mon père avait passé sa carrière dans la fabrication lunetière parisienne, puis aux côtés d’Alain Afflelou jusqu’à sa retraite. J’ai grandi dedans.
BTS Opticien-Lunetier en 2000. Puis six années chez les enseignes — Alain Afflelou, Optic 2000 — et chez des indépendants, dont quatre ans sur les Champs-Élysées, deux comme responsable adjoint.
Vincennes 2006, Lisbonne 2024
En 2006, je reprends Optique du Bois à Vincennes, une institution du quartier tenue par la même personne depuis 35 ans. Rénovation complète en 2013, et une identité qui s’installe : l’opticien créateur de Vincennes. Je possède toujours cette boutique.
En 2019, ma femme — opticienne elle aussi — et moi partons vivre à Lisbonne avec nos trois enfants. En avril 2024, j’ouvre Steve Attal Optica à Campo de Ourique, cette fois sous mon propre nom.

Je me déplace sur les salons internationaux — New York, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Milan, Paris — pour rapporter des montures avant tout le monde.
Mais la monture n’est que la moitié du travail. Ici, on parle d’abord. J’écoute, je regarde votre visage, votre métier, votre façon de vivre. Ensuite on essaie. Parfois douze paires. Une bonne monture ne vous cache pas : elle vous présente.
Je travaille en français, anglais et portugais — un point d’ancrage naturel pour la communauté francophone et expatriée de Lisbonne.
